Ruth Roman was born on June 22nd, 1939, at Lynn Massachusetts. The actress is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth grew up in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She left school after two years in order to study acting. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime, but theatrical work eluded her. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call the shots and moving back to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. She earned money by working during the day in the ushering department. She graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
